Sunset over Guadalupe Peak and El Capitan Panorama 1
Guadalupe Mountains National Park
This panorama from Guadalupe Peak shows a beautiful west Texas sunset from Guadalupe Mountains National Park. At this elevation of 8,751 feet, you can see the Chihuahuan Desert to the south and west. Below this vantage point is El Capitan, an iconic landmark for both earlier Indians and settlers. This photograph is made up of 12 images blended together to create the wide angle vista from Texas’ highest point. The trail to reach this point is a well maintained but rocky path leading up 3,000 vertical feet over 4.2 miles (that’s the distance the map displays, though my Garmin GPS recorded it as 4.65 miles). Regardless, the effort to reach this point will pay off with spectacular views of our Lone Star State. While shooting up here over several nights, I always had the entire summit to myself. That’s not a bad way to spend an evening.
