Djúpalónssandur Beach on a Sunny Afternoon 1
Snæfellsnes Peninsula, Iceland
Djúpalónssandur beach is a beautiful black pebbled beach along the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. Four "lifting stones" remain on the beach as a testament to the past where sailors tested their strength and attempted to earn a job on a fishing vessel.
In ages past, this area was the home to nearly 60 ships and existed as a fishing hub. Today, the beach is empty except for the remains of a washed-up shipwreck - a washed up British trawler from 1948. The black sands are also said to be haunted, and anyone who removes even one of the smooth black pebbles will be tormented by misfortune. Photo © copyright by Rob Greebon.
