Aldeyjarfoss, Iceland 1

North Iceland Highlands

At the Aldeyjarfoss waterfall in the northern Iceland highlands, the Skjálfandafljót River drops ~ 65 feet. Flanked by basalt columns from the Frambruni lava field, this waterfall sits along the Sprengisandur Highland Road about 40km off the ring road. It is not far (maybe 2 hours round trip) from the much more well-known Goðafoss. However, it is quite a bit more spectacular and worth the trip.

I had to pass through several gates to reach the parking area, but when I arrived, it was just the sound of roaring water and solitude. Photo © copyright by Rob Greebon.
