West Iceland Travels

Welcome to this photo gallery of West Iceland filled with sweeping, lava-created shores, one of the highest volcanoes in the country, Snæfellsjökull Volcano, waterfalls at every turn, and quaint villages to stop for food and gas. Here are a few of my favorite stops:

* Snæfellsnes Peninsula - a peninsula and national park
* Kirkjufell Mountain and Kirkjufoss - the most photographed mountain and waterfall in Iceland
*Ingjaldshólskirkja and Búðakirkja - churches worth quick side trips to learn a little of Iceland’s history. Ingjaldshólskirkja is surrounded by lupine in June.
* Arnarstapiand & Lóndrangar - windswept coastal areas featuring unique rock formations.
* Djúpalónssandur - a pristine black sands beach with remants of a shipwreck. Legend has it that ghosts haunt the beach, as well. Don't remove any of the smooth rock at Djúpalónssandur beach or the ghosts will follow you!
* Westman Islands - four nautical miles and a short boat ride from the mainland are a chain of 16 volcanic islands known as Westman Islands. The main town is known as Vestmannaeyjar, which is the port for the only inhabited island, Heimaey.
