Columbine at American Basin, Colorado
Lake City, Colorado
I had camped at the Silver Creek trailhead which leads up to Red Cloud and Sunshine Peak, However, I had hoped I'd find opportunities to photograph wildflowers in this basin near Lake City, Colorado. The road to the Silver Creek trailhead isn't to bad - just 16 miles down a dirt road. However, the 4 miles from that point to American Basin is much more taxing. After navigating a shelf road, several stream crossings, and some huge rocks and bumpy roads, i finally made it to the small dirt pull off for this site. When I arrived, the clouds were thick, but as the 30 minutes before sunset progressed, the clouds began to quickly disappear and the sun lit up what remained. This Colorado wildflower image comes from Amercian Basin on a cool July evening. Photo © copyright by Rob Greebon.
